Although grief is a deeply personal and unique journey, it’s one that no one need walk alone. Hospice West Auckland offers Bereavement Support Groups, 6-week programmes for those who have experienced a bereavement through Hospice. Facilitated by our experienced Grief Counsellor, the groups meet weekly in a safe, compassionate space where participants can find connection, understanding and support.
Each person brings their own goals and challenges to the programme. Meeting and connecting with others in similar circumstances, learning how to manage loneliness, adapting to living alone, or supporting family members who are also grieving are particularly common themes.
For some, the loss of a loved one means the end of a fulltime caregiving role that once defined their daily lives, and it can be difficult to know how to rebuild. Others may struggle with complex emotions like guilt or anger. Our groups help participants to navigate these feelings by providing both emotional support and practical guidance.

The programme explores the ‘ripple effect’ of grief – how it touches every part of life, from identity and relationships to daily routines and future plans. As a group we can help people adjust to their new reality and learn how to shape a future that honours their loss while being open to allow healing and growth. We also explore common triggers and reminders of loss, and provide tools to help manage those moments. We reinforce that there is no rule book: everyone is different, it’s not about comparing, and the groups explore what helps participants dealing with grief.
One of the most powerful aspects of our Bereavement Support Groups is the opportunity to meet with others experiencing grief and loss. Participants listen and share, learn how others are coping, and discover helpful things to try. Without exception, each group has made lasting connections and have continued their bond by staying in touch after the programme has finished, in whatever format might suit them.
At Hospice West Auckland, we walk alongside you through the end-of-life journey and beyond it. Our Bereavement Support Groups can offer hope, companionship and a path forward.
