Over the past 30 years, Robert has built an incredible collection of 8,000 Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars that line the shelves of his home. His collection includes everything from everyday cars to rare finds like Fast and the Furious, Thunderbirds, Ghostbusters and 007 editions. In fact, he has so many that it’s impossible to display even half of them so he has 12 large storage bins full of cars in his garage.

For Robert, the difference between Matchbox and Hot Wheels has always been clear. “About 5,000 of my collection are Matchbox cars, going back 30 years,” he shares proudly. “The Matchbox ones are the real deal – rubber wheels, better details, better quality. Matchbox originated in England, and if you get early editions like 1960s or 1970s they can go for thousands of dollars each. Matchbox are much harder to get here in New Zealand.”

Even now, as he faces serious illness, Robert’s passion for collecting hasn’t dimmed. Despite the sheer number, Robert has an excellent memory and always knows which cars he’s already got and which ones he’d like to add to his collection. He still browses online, in stores, and attends the Freeman’s Bay Hobbies Fair twice a year. “It’s a healthy habit,” he laughs. “If you sell them, you get your money back. It’s a good investment and a lot of fun.”

And while his health journey has been extremely challenging, Hospice West Auckland has been a steady source of support. “Hospice are the only ones who’ve really helped me,” Robert says. “They’ve managed my pain and been there whenever I’ve needed them. Without them, I’d be lost.”

Robert first came to know about Hospice when his mother, who had dementia, was supported by their care. Since then, he has generously donated countless goods to the Hospice Op Shops over the years, helping to raise vital funds for free Hospice care in West Auckland. He is even considering passing on some of his treasured collectable cars in time. But for now, Robert’s cars remain a source of happiness and pride as he continues to treasure and add to his astonishing collection.
